BOOKsisters are adult book groups that sponsor and support professionally led book groups for underserved young women.
Members of an existing adult book group join BOOKsisters by making an annual pledge toward the support of a Literature for All of Us teen group.
BOOKsisters receive regular program updates, including book lists, samples of poetry and invitations to poetry readings by the young women whose lives are touched by Literature for All of Us.
A BOOKsisters group may choose to read the same book as the group they sponsor, and even invite the young women to a shared discussion.
As women in book groups, our lives are richer because we discover the different worlds inside books and share that experience with each other. The young women entering a Literature for All of Us book group have rarely had such experiences. Many have never owned a book or even been to a library.
Hopeful and strong, these young women struggle every day with early parenting, poverty, and violence.
BOOKsisters harness the power, passion and resources of adult book groups to “pay it forward”.
By becoming BOOKsisters, we reach across generations, as well as racial, ethnic and economic differences, to give young people the opportunity to learn and become their best selves.
