Poetry is a valuable literacy tool and a critical part of our book group program model. Young people are empowered as they find their creative voice, develop critical thinking and gain confidence. It provides a place for even unrecognized students to shine.
Young people are able to write about matters of importance to them — matters related to race, culture, gender and the truths of their communities. They use poetry as a mouthpiece to express their views about society, making them feel more empowered as citizens.
Poetry provides a way for young people to express difficult emotions such as love, confusion, anger. It answers their need to reflect on life’s experiences and gives meaning and order to these events. They then discover not only the language to express their thoughts and feelings but also the pleasures of language itself.
