Pulitzer Finalist Rebecca Makkai to Speak at 2020 Spring Fundraiser
On April 26th, Literature for All of Us will host its annual fundraising event, Spring Bunch, at the Byrn Mawr Country Club. This year, we are deeply honored to welcome Rebecca Makkai, author and 2019 Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist for The Great Believers, as keynote speaker. The book also captured the 2019 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and the L.A. Times Book Prize, among other awards. In addition, Makkai has written The Hundred Year House, The Borrower, and Music for Wartime.
This annual event includes brunch with mimosas, silent and live auctions showcasing travel, restaurants, cultural and retail opportunities, and an exciting program highlighting our impact and work over the past year. Irika Sargent, Emmy award-winning anchor of CBS2 Evening News, will emcee.
Described by author Sandra Cisneros as a “tent revival for the written word,” the Spring fundraiser is an opportunity for the robust Literature for All of Us community to gather in support of our mission and hear about recent accomplishments. Past speakers have included such literary powerhouses as Cisneros, U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo, Jane Hamilton, Cristina Henriquez, Nami Mun, Dawn Turner, and Gail Tsukiyama.
Since its founding in 1997, the organization has worked with nearly 10,000 participants across Chicagoland. In the 2019-2020 school year, Literature for All of Us is providing weekly book groups at neighborhood sites in Humboldt Park, Little Village, Evanston, Cicero, Albany Park, Rogers Park, Back of the Yards, South Shore, Illinois Medical District, and Lincoln Park.
